What is beet?
Beet, or beetroot, is a root vegetable long used in cooking and, more recently, in sports nutrition and greens supplements because of its naturally high dietary nitrate content. For powder form, the whole root is typically dried and milled, preserving both its nitrates and its characteristic red-purple betalain pigments.
What are the benefits of beet?
Dietary nitrates from beet are converted in the body into nitric oxide, a molecule involved in blood vessel dilation, which is why beet is associated with supporting healthy circulation and exercise stamina. Betalains, the pigments responsible for beet's deep color, are also studied for their antioxidant properties.
In a greens blend, beet adds both a functional nitrate component and a visual and nutritional boost from its pigment content, complementing other root and leafy vegetables in the formula.
How much beet is in Daily Greens?
Beet is part of the 2.6 g superfood, antioxidant and mushroom blend, and like other ingredients in that blend, its individual gram amount is not broken out separately on the label.
Who should be careful with beet?
People with a history of kidney stones should be aware that beet contains oxalates, which in large amounts can contribute to stone formation in those who are prone to them; discussing overall oxalate intake with a doctor is reasonable if this applies to you.
Beet can also cause urine or stool to take on a pink or red tinge in some people, a harmless effect known as beeturia. People on blood pressure medication should mention regular beet intake to their doctor, since its nitrate content can have an additive effect on blood pressure.
Beet questions, answered
- Why does beet turn urine red?
- This harmless effect, called beeturia, happens in some people when a red pigment in beets called betanin isn't fully broken down during digestion.
- Does beet powder support blood pressure?
- Beet's dietary nitrates convert into nitric oxide in the body, which supports normal blood vessel function; people on blood pressure medication should mention regular beet intake to their doctor.
- Is beet powder the same as beet juice?
- Both come from the same root, but powder is a dried, concentrated form, while juice retains more water and a milder concentration per serving.
